Fin Bason – Dental Aid Trip to Jordan Blog

Day 1

Start of an enriching and exciting adventure. Thanks to all who helped me reach the revised (doubled) target of £1000 for Dental Aid Network for us to provide dental emergency work for the refugees in Jordan! Will keep you all posted!

Day 2

An amazing first day at Petra in the desert wandering the natural and man-made wonders plus getting to know the dental team.

Day 3

First day of dental screening and dental hygiene, diet advice plus toothbrushes and toothpaste in Al Mafraq and the other half of the team in Madaba. 90 children seen, emergency treatment carried out and others scheduled for treatment over next few days. Fantastic hospitality by our local village leader with a traditional meal Bedouin style!

Day 4

Yesterday was very intense and rewarding. We treated 21 patients and managed over 40. The support and hospitality of the local family meant we managed to treat more patients, with translating, admin and clinical support. The volunteers managed to drop into routine quickly where we also worked in the GP’s examining room doing screenings and simple extractions. At the end of the day we ate again and experienced amazing Jordanian hospitality.

The Final Day

Yesterday was last day of clinics. I worked at another camp clinic for Palestinian refugees in Madaba under clinical coordinator Niki. Also some pictures of the refugees and deprived residents who we were able to directly donate monies raised by the generosity of the donors. We distributed £5000 raised between the volunteers ) £1370 from my Just Giving site) and helped about 100 families with direct cash donations. With no state support, families with no wage earner rely on the strength of community to help. Families of 6 or more, some with disabled and a sick children my survive on less than £5 per day if lucky. I feel privileged to have been a team member on this mission and have a lot to reflect on about poverty and how lucky I am to have a healthy family. A big thanks to everyone who was able to donate and directly help families who they will never meet but who have been very grateful for the money and more importantly to know that there are people and charities around the world who care for those less fortunate. 🙏🏼
